Wycliffe, Tyndale Establish New Linguistics Program

Mar. 4 /09

Wycliffe Canada has signed an agreement with Tyndale University College to establish a linguistics program on its campus in Toronto. The agreement, signed in mid-February, enables Wycliffe candidates to complete many of their pre-field training requirements at Tyndale.

The new program will begin this September with a minor in linguistics. The first course will be a year-long Introduction to Linguistics, followed by an intensive linguistics summer program in 2010, featuring four courses. It is hoped that a linguistics major will be in place by 2010.

Wycliffe Canada Executive Director Dave Ohlson sees the opportunity of working with Tyndale as a positive step, especially since the program will be offered in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), with its highest population density in Canada.

"This agreement is significant in that it is affording Christian students in the GTA the opportunity to take linguistics as a part of their preparation, for potential missionary service, in a Christian context close to home.”

Ohlson said Tyndale has a long history of educational excellence, including an emphasis on missions, so the agreement demonstrates partnership in an area that is important to both Wycliffe and Tyndale.

"This agreement can only enhance recruitment opportunities as more students have the opportunity to explore what is happening in the ministries of the worldwide Bible translation movement.”

Discussions to set up the new program began more than four years ago. Wycliffe has wanted to have a training program in Eastern Canada for over a decade, to supplement courses offered in Western Canada by its partner, the Canada Institute of Linguistics (CanIL), at Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C.

Tyndale President Brian Stiller said the university was happy partnering with Wycliffe on the new linguistics program, which will strengthen both parties.

"I think Wycliffe has maintained both its spiritual and intellectual authority,” he said. “And I think their affiliation with us will accelerate their mission.”

Tyndale has had a close relationship with Wycliffe for a long time, with many Tyndale alumni working in overseas missions as Bible translators.
