Wycliffe Canada’s Word Alive magazine has earned seven awards for writing, photography and design for this past year’s issues. The awards were announced at recent conferences of the Evangelical Press Association (EPA) in Irving, Tex., and the Canadian Church Press (CCP), in Toronto, Ont. EPA named Word Alive the top magazine by a missionary agency. The “award of excellence” in this category is a first for the periodical, though it has received runners-up “awards of merit” in past years.
“The writing is extremely strong,” the EPA award judge said. “Content is wholly appropriate for [the] stated mission and well fulfils the goals. The images are high quality and good storytellers in their own right. Really nice quality paper and graphics reproduction.” Word Alive Editor Dwayne Janke said the magazine’s staff is extremely thankful it can work on a periodical worthy of an award. “We are blessed to have the support of Wycliffe Canada leadership so we can produce a strong photo/journalistic magazine,” he said. “And we have a great editorial, photography and design team. All of us are passionate to intimately and professionally tell stories about what God is achieving through our colleagues in Bible translation and related ministries around the globe.” Other EPA awards given to Word Alive were: Higher Goal Awards (1st place) - Typography & Lettering: “Alphabet Makers” title - Spring 2009 - (Laird Salkeld, designer) (3rd place) - Single-Theme Section/Issue: “Let Hands Speak and Eyes Listen” - Summer 2009 (Dwayne Janke, author) (4th place) - Single Photo/Candid: "Harvest Mission Deaf Church Choir" - Summer 2009 (Alan Hood, photographer) At the CCP convention, Word Alive received three awards, including first place for a magazine photo spread. The award was for “God’s Word is Powerful!” (Summer 2009), photographed by Alan Hood.
The judge said: “This is a wonderful, informative, educational powerful work. It is the best of the show in my opinion. The photos are great for what they need to communicate.” Other CCP awards for Word Alive were:
(2nd place) - Feature Layout and Design – Magazine: “One Cool Coordinator” (Spring 2009) - Designer: Laird Salkeld
As a member of both EPA and CCP, Word Alive magazine enters their award contests, largely to receive critiques from judges. This valuable input helps push staff to improve efforts in writing, photography and design, and has prompted various changes in the magazine over the years.
