Wycliffe Author Honoured in National Writing Awards

Sept. 13 /11

A book written by Marshall Lawrence, a retired member of Wycliffe Bible Translators, was among the winners in a national awards ceremony held recently in Mississauga, Ont. The World at My Door

The World at My Door received an Award of Merit from The Word Guild. The national association consists of nearly 400 writers and editors across Canada who write from a Christian perspective and publish work in a variety of genres.

Winners were announced at the guild's annual gala, held June 15 at World Vision's headquarters in Mississauga.

Lawrence, whose book was recognized in the category of Life Stories, was among 29 writers honoured for books published in 2010. Winners were chosen from among 250 competing entries from across Canada and beyond—150 books and 110 shorter entries. The 35 award categories include non-fiction books, novels, articles, columns, blogs, poems, and song lyrics.

Marshall and Helen Lawrence spent more than 25 years in Papua New Guinea, living in the mountains with the Oksapmin people. His book highlights some events and relationships experienced during those years.

“It is rewarding for me to have my book recognized...for this award,” Lawrence said. “Many readers have told me that my book brings the world we experienced right into their hearts and lives. Such comments make the many years of isolated living in the mountains and the eight years of working on the book worthwhile.”
