Learning to Serve

Senegal Literacy Project

Yes, children have a lot to give right now, before they grow up! They can learn to pray for, learn about and even serve children in Senegal. As an optional activity, your children can help a Senegalese child learn to read so that they will be able to read the Bible and experience God’s great love. (A $6/month donation will provide the funds needed for this part of the project and makes a perfect giving project for kids.

Feel free to download interactive lessons, literacy samples, take-home materials and photographs to add to your vacation Bible school, Sunday school or other classes.

Uganda Scripture Poster Project

Child colouring bookMany kids love to express themselves with pens, pencils, crayons and markers. The Uganda Scripture Poster Project gives them an opportunity to colour and encourage kids in Africa at the same time.

In this series of 30 minute lessons, children will create and colour Scripture posters, as awards for Ugandan children who are learning to read in the language they speak at home with their parents.

In Uganda and many other countries, children speak one language at home and another language at school. This project will encourage Ugandan children to become literate in their mother tongue. When the children reach an  educational milestone, they will receive one of these Scripture posters.

Furthermore, hanging these Scripture verse posters on a wall in their home will instil a sense of accomplishment in new readers, cement God’s Word in their hearts each time they read it, and allow them to share God’s Word with family and guests who visit them.

Preparation for this project takes two people about 30 minutes each, or one person about one hour. This project is a great way for children to help children (and their families) by using a skill they possess right now—colouring! We hope that you and your children or children’s group enjoy this project of beautifying homes and hearts with God’s Word.

The Jesus Messiah Picture Book

The Jesus Messiah Picture BookThis high quality, full-colour pictorial representation of the life of Christ, with accompanying text, is helping people in the African countries of Benin and Togo to understand the Word of God. Your financial help is needed to get this book into the hands of women and children in these countries, so they can improve their literacy skills and gain a better understanding of the gospel.

Consider challenging a kids' Sunday school class, home school group or other children you know to help fund this project.

More about the Messiah Picture Book

JMPB was recently distributed among the Idaasha people of Benin. The word "idaasha" means "people of the 41 hills". Back in the 1700's and 1800's, these people hid themselves on top of a series of mountains in southern Benin in order to escape from those who would capture them and sell them as slaves to colonial powers. When slavery was banished, they moved down from the mountain tops and established villages in the valleys below.

They have wanted God's Word in their language for many decades and several pastors came together to start working on translating portions of the Bible.

When they finished the translation of Luke, they chose the Jesus Messiah Picture Book as the way they wanted to get this portion of God's Word out to the Idaasha people. In March of 2008, 2,000 copies of the JMPB in the Idaasha language were delivered to church leaders for distribution.

As one Idaasha woman began to read the picture book she started to cry. "Why are you crying?" someone enquired. "Because I understand. I finally African reading scripture understand!" Having good pictures along with biblical text communicates a powerful message to those who don't have very much to read in their own language. For many who won't read otherwise, they will pick up the picture book and spend time trying to read it.

We have found that it's not just children who like to read the picture book, adults also enjoy it and learn who Jesus is. Along with the JMPB in 18 languages in Togo and Benin, we are also making available a Bible study guide in French that can be used in conjunction with the JMPB. Many Sunday school teachers have been trained and are actively using the guide in their church classes.

The cost of a JMPB is currently set at $2. There is an effort to try and subsidize it so that it would be cheaper for those who live in villages away from cities. The Bible study guide is $2.50.
