Word Alive is published four times annually by Wycliffe Bible Translators of Canada Inc.
Word Alive, which takes its name from Hebrews 4:12a, is the official publication of Wycliffe Canada. Its mission is to inform, inspire and involve the Christian public as partners in the worldwide Bible translation movement.
- It informs readers, through an "advocacy journalism" (rather than a strongly promotional) approach to its editorial content (i.e. furthering Bible translation, but doing it through use of a photo-journalistic style with feature stories and lots of large photos).
- It inspires readers to be interested in the Bible translation movement, through articles and photo stories that touch the heart and the mind.
- It involves the Christian public by building their awareness in, and compassion for, the work, so that they will become and remain partners, as the Holy Spirit enables.
Word Alive is Wycliffe Canada's “flagship” media piece giving a global, “big picture” presentation and report of our work. It is the key media that gives detail and space for presentations about the people, activities and issues associated with Bible translation and related tasks. The result is that more informed readers can ultimately be better connected to the ministry.

Word Alive has benefited from professional evaluations by The Editorial Eye, the Evangelical Press Association (EPA), and the Canadian Church Press (CCP), through actual critiques and/or award entry responses. (Incidentally, WAM has won several dozen awards in our first five years of membership in the two organizations.) This input has affected our design, in such areas as grids, white space, text legibility, and color use. It is causing us to tell our stories more through the people involved than the strategies employed. We are aiming to better explain people’s motivation for involvement in the task. The “process” of what we do on the field is being represented more intentionally.
