Happy New Year & Good Beginnings

2018-01-30

We have completed three weeks of the second semester, and things are really humming.  It seems like the second semester is always fuller and busier than the first.  I am so thankful for a good break over Christmas.  I had a good mix of times of worship and reflection, time with friends, rest, and time to work on planning for the second half of the school year.  I love being able to work with an inspiration at 2 am knowing I can sleep the next day.  Creating the forms and documents for efficient instruction and record keeping before school starts always makes classes run more smoothly.

Planning has become even more important as I joined my fifth department this semester.  I added another course to my teaching load.  I am very excited to have the privilege of teaching study skills to our eighth graders.  We will be focusing on goal setting, time management, organization and test preparation skills.  I am also happy to be teaching a class on reading the Bible.  We will be reading the entire New Testament together as well as exploring reading methods and how our culture and the genre of the text impact our understanding.  This class replaces the class on prayer I was teaching last semester.  Our eleventh- and twelfth-grade students are enjoying getting to choose different semester-long topics to explore in order to complete their Bible requirements for graduation.  I am enjoying getting to teach new topics and different students each term.

One of the highlights of the break was a day of prayer on January 2.  I joined some of the people who work in fields other than education to worship and pray together.  We spent time in confession and praise before lifting up each other, our work and the needs of Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea.  As different people invited us to join in praying for different topics, together, aloud, in our hearts, in groups small and large, I realized again the diversity of the Kingdom of God.  He uses so many different people with different gifts to accomplish his purposes.  At one point we spent some time alone meditating on God’s word.  When we came together again some people shared what was meaningful to them.  It was a blessing to ponder the important role trust plays in our ability to fully listen and the amazing invitation God extends to us to be a part of His work.  It was a very blessed day.

Thank you for joining me on the journey.

Rejoice with me for:
A strong start to the new semester
Some people expressing an interest in coming to help us next year

Request with me for:
Wisdom in balancing the need for rest, reflection, and planning for the future over the break
God’s provision for our staffing needs next year
Pray especially for young, energetic, creative, certified teachers
