Americas REED, Martin and Alice Martin and Alice are based in Calgary, Alberta with their children Grace (8) and Kai (5). Martin develops relationships between Wycliffe and First Nations believers in Canada so that the organization can better support their Bible translation and language development needs. He is also pursuing certification as a sociolinguistics consultant. Alice is a Bible translation consultant who reviews completed Scripture translations for clarity, accuracy, and naturalness prior to publication. In addition to supporting the Blackfoot translation project in southern Alberta, Alice also serves translation teams internationally, primarily in anglophone and francophone Africa. Before moving to Calgary, the Reeds worked in northern Manitoba and Quebec, partnering with First Nations church leaders to create Scripture products and promote the use of Indigenous languages in church, school, and community life. Alice holds a Ph.D. in Intercultural Studies from Fuller Theological Seminary and a M.A. in Biblical Exegesis and Linguistics from Dallas Theological Seminary. Americas HETTINGA, Justin and Tammy Justin grew up in Saskatoon, Sask., while Tammy grew up in Chilliwack, B.C. and later (junior and senior high years) in the Peruvian Amazon as a Wycliffe missionary kid. This prairie boy and jungle girl met at Canadian Bible College in Regina, Sask. Their shared interest in South America and their desire to serve in cross-cultural ministry were two of many things that sparked their relationship, which resulted in marriage in 1994. They joined Wycliffe Bible Translators in 1997 and began their training with Wycliffe Canada’s training partner, the Canada Institute of Linguistics, in 1998. By 1999, they were on their way to Costa Rica for Spanish studies. The following year, they began their first assignment in Peru as adult literacy specialists among the Quechua people. There they helped several indigenous organizations develop sustainable literacy and Bible translation programs. In 2007, Justin completed his master of arts in leadership degree (non-governmental organization specialization) from Trinity Western University (done mostly via distance while in Peru). Having completed their project in the summer of 2010, they moved to Wycliffe Canada’s headquarters in Calgary, where they served on the leadership/administrative team for six years. In May 2016, Justin began serving as the Americas Area director for SIL (Wycliffe’s main field partner). In this role, he gives leadership to all of SIL’s work in North, Central, South America, and the Caribbean. Tammy is his administrative assistant. Although their roles have changed over the years, their vision remains the same: that all peoples on earth have access to the Word of God in a language they understand best, enabling them to flourish in life and know God. South Pacific HOFFMANN, Alex Alex was raised in a Christian home in Ottawa, Ont. He earned his BA in linguistics from the University of Ottawa in 2015 and his Master of Theological Studies from Conrad Grebel University College (University of Waterloo) in 2018. The latter included a linguistics internship in Cameroon, Africa with SIL, Wycliffe’s key partner organization. He also served as a missionary with Youth with a Mission in 2016 and in 2019, Alex attended a summer course held by Wycliffe Canada’s training partner, the Canada Institute of Linguistics. Alex became a member of Wycliffe Canada in January 2020 and will be going to Papua New Guinea in March 2021; he will serve initially as a linguist, but is also interested in Scripture translation. ‎ KUNZ, Beat and Robyn Beat and Robyn have been serving with Wycliffe in Africa, Switzerland, and Canada since 1997. Having lived and worked in the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Chad, Beat and Robyn returned with their family to work from the Calgary office in 2016. Beat was vice-president of field partnerships, visiting and evaluating projects sponsored by Wycliffe Canada. Robyn worked in partnership development, helping members build their support teams. In 2024, Beat and Robyn took on new assignments in Bible-based trauma healing, which restores hope to people’s lives through the power of God’s Word in their language. ‎ BOWMAN, Joseph Joseph was born and raised in the Niagara Region of Ontario. He has been a lover of words and languages all his life. Though a native English speaker, French was his favourite subject in school. He has undergraduate degrees in French-English translation and linguistics (and studied Spanish and German as well), bilingual professional writing (technical writing and journalism), and much later on, a Bachelor of Education degree in Adult Education. Joseph spent 14 years working for the Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) while simultaneously completing a Master of Theological Studies. While still at WSIB, he began serving as a licensed lay minister in the Christian Reformed Church (CRC), providing pulpit supply at many CRC congregations. He continues to serve CRC in this capacity to this day. With his theological and linguistic studies, work in both Greek and Hebrew, and being an English grammarian of the top degree (he will sometimes correct other people’s grammar in conversation!), he felt called to join The Bible Translator’s Assistant (TBTA) team at Wycliffe. Working with TBTA will allow Joseph to use his language and grammar skills to help develop software that allows minority language groups to more rapidly complete first drafts of translated Scriptures. By hastening that process, translators can focus their efforts on ensuring the accuracy of translation and equipping people for deeper Scripture engagement. In his spare time, Joseph is an avid Scrabble player. He has been playing Scrabble competitively in clubs and tournaments (yes, there is such a thing) for more than 20 years. Americas HONECKER, Steve and Dawn Ministry Focus: Finance/expense report processing “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms (1 Peter 4:10 NIV). Steve was working as a commercial truck driver when he learned that Wycliffe moved missionaries with trucks and had a great need for drivers. He enjoyed serving in that capacity for the summer of 1983. In 1986, he was able to begin the process of serving on a longer term basis. Over a period of 15 years, he was able to assist missionaries from many organizations move thousands of shipments. This involved travel in 44 states and the western part of Canada. During one of his trips to the east coast, Steve met a special young lady. Dawn grew up in South America where her father was a missionary pilot. She was spending the summer with her parents in North Carolina between years of college. They were married in 1989 and spent their first year together in Canada. A Wycliffe training centre in the mountains of California was the location for their first assignment. Dawn worked on the finances for the centre while Steve did maintenance and also moved missionaries part time. Eventually, Steve became the West Coast Operations Manager for the trucking operation. When the west coast warehouse was closed, Steve and Dawn were made aware of the need for a business manager in Vanuatu. They were able to help out the translators in that country for about 4 years. As their daughters prepared for high school, educational opportunities were very limited in Vanuatu. Once again, Steve and Dawn were made aware of a need, and this time it was for someone to process expense reports in Wycliffe Canada’s office in Calgary. They accepted this challenge and their daughters were able to continue with their education in Alberta. Africa HAKKOLA, Marko and Pauline Marko and Pauline, Wycliffe Canada members since 1998, trained at the Canada Institute of Linguistics in Langley, B.C., where Marko graduated with a Master’s in Linguistics and Exegesis in 2000. Passionate about the vision that everyone should have access to God’s Word in their own language, the Hakkolas have worked in Mali, West Africa, where they facilitated translation of Bible books and selections in two related languages, now continuing to ensure that all translated Scripture is promoted and accessed in every possible way. This includes radio programs, websites, two Scripture Apps, and the “JESUS” film. Southeast Asia HARMAN, Derek and Kristie Derek and Kristie’s desire to serve the Lord was nurtured from childhood, having been blessed with Christian parents. Derek grew up in Temiskaming Shores and Timmins, Ont., while Kristie grew up near Brantford, Ont. On a mission trip to Ukraine in 1998, Derek decided that Bible translation was how he wanted to serve God. Derek and Kristie met in 1995 at a Christian youth camp and they were married in August 2000. Kristie got her first experience of overseas missions on a trip to Kyrgyzstan shortly after they were married. This trip solidified the desire to help and love people globally. The Harmans both completed linguistic training at the Canada Institute of Linguistics (CanIL) in Langley, B.C. Derek and Kristie became members of Wycliffe in 2002. That same year, they were blessed with their first son, Jayden. Then in 2005, their second son, Cedric, was born. In December 2005, the Harmans moved to Asia to work in Bible translation. They eventually began the role of helping a minority language group of 8,000 to 12,000 people to translate the Bible into their own language. In August 2016, the Gospel of Mark was printed and distributed. In March 2017, a collection of 50 Bible stories was published on the Internet. Video files of the Bible stories are also available for cellphones and in DVD format. In 2020, Genesis was printed and distribution began. In 2022, the translation team completed a church liturgy for nine church services including 73 Scripture verses from various books of the Bible. In 2020, the Harmans moved back to Canada so Jayden and Cedric could finish their education here. Jayden is now married to Hannah and they live in Ottawa. Cedric has joined the Navy and is currently training for his role. In 2021, Derek was approved as a translation consultant and continues to serve languages in Asia in this capacity. In 2025, Kristie began serving in Wycliffe as a Staff Care Advisor. Americas ANDERSON, Brian and Lois Brian and Lois joined Wycliffe in 1995 and 1999 respectively. They were married in 2012 after serving in the same location (Cameroon) for many years. Brian is originally from the USA and has filled roles in computer support, typesetting Scripture, network management and now software development. Lois was born in Canada and grew up in Papua New Guinea. She has served as a teacher, school administrator, mobilizer, applications advisor and is now a Candidates and Recruitment Leader for one of Wycliffe's partners. Americas PIKKERT, Joost and Cheryl Joost and Cheryl met at Wheaton College in Illinois and after Joost completed his Ph.D., they joined Wycliffe and began working in Indonesia. Over the years they have been involved in Bible translation, multilingual education, ethnomusicology and administration. They have helped to write multilingual curriculum, encourage local music and raise funding for projects in more than 30 languages. They especially enjoy opportunities to train Indonesians, both in the field and through Indonesian Christian colleges and seminaries.
