Yet only about 45,000 are known believers—a mere 0.2% of the population. Isan culture is rich with music, dance, food and storytelling. Many families make a living through rice farming and small-scale agriculture, often facing economic hardship and limited opportunities. Americas DAVIES, Wanda Although Wanda grew up in Washington state, she now calls Langley, B.C. home. Her husband, John, was from Vancouver, B.C. They met in Nairobi, Kenya and were married in January 2001. John went to his heavenly home in 2015. Wanda began working with Wycliffe immediately following graduation from college. She began in Mexico and later transferred to Sudan. She feels privileged to have served in a wide range of work, including language development, a bilingual education program, facilitation of a mother-tongue translation program, training nationals for Bible translation and co-ordination of language programs. Since 2006, she has been teaching literacy courses at the Canada Institute of Linguistics. Americas MURPHEY, Chuck and Jocelyn Chuck and Jocelyn Murphey work for Wycliffe Bible Translators of Canada as linguistics specialists and are based in Langley, B.C. Linguistics is very important for Bible translation, as it ensures good, accurate translations of the Bible for the communities that need the Gospel in the language they understand best. It also provides important resources for community language development, such as literacy materials and health information. Chuck and Jocelyn have two main roles with Wycliffe Canada: The first is to support the Canada Institute of Linguistics (CanIL) in teaching and administration. This school trains Bible translation workers to serve language communities all over the world that need the Gospel in their language. The second is to serve Indigenous communities in Canada by supporting their language revitalization efforts. Americas SNIDER, Keith and Ruth Keith and Ruth joined Wycliffe Bible Translators in August, 1977. Following linguistics training, which included Keith completing an M.A. in linguistics at the University of Texas at Arlington, they began serving with Wycliffe in Ghana (West Africa) in 1982. Together with another couple, they helped to complete the Chumburung New Testament in 1987. They then went to the Netherlands for three years, where Keith completed a doctorate in African linguistics at the University of Leiden. Following French study in Quebec, Keith and Ruth began serving in the Republic of Cameroon (Central Africa) in 1993. In Cameroon, Keith worked as a linguistics consultant and Ruth as a hostess. Keith also served as an international linguistics consultant with Wycliffe from 1995-2011. In this capacity, he attended linguistics conferences and led many linguistics workshops for Bible translators in a number of different countries, including Ethiopia, Kenya, Togo, Nigeria, Chad, and Burkina Faso. Later, from 2000 to 2010, Keith and Ruth served full time at the Canada Institute of Linguistics (CanIL), Wycliffe’s training school in Langley, B.C. on the campus of Trinity Western University. At different times during that period, Keith taught linguistics, directed the M.A. in linguistics program, and served as the academic dean. During this time, Ruth worked mainly as a receptionist. From 2010 to the present, Keith has been working full time as a certified senior linguistics consultant in the organization, providing consultant help internationally in the areas of tone analysis (analyzing how languages use pitch to distinguish meaning) and writing systems development. He also continues to teach part time at CanIL, to supervise master’s theses, to present papers at linguistics conferences, and to write linguistics articles for publication. He has recently published a textbook on how to analyze tone languages, which has also been translated into French. Americas PENNER, Kevin and Laurel Kevin and Laurel have three children, Kyle, Gabrielle and Daniela. The Penners joined Wycliffe in 1999, and in January 2003, initiated a Bible translation project for the Ixtayutla Mixtec (ISO 639-3: vmj) people in Oaxaca, Mexico. Due to a family health crisis, they relocated to Canada in 2006, but carried on the project primarily through Internet connectivity and periodic trips back to Mexico to work with a team of Mixtec translators. During their time in Canada, Kevin also began working on a PhD in linguistics, which he completed in January 2019. Americas HAASDYK, Jeremy and Judy Jeremy, Judy, and their two daughters are currently living in Langley, B.C. and working at the Canada Institute of Linguistics (CanIL); Jeremy as director of finance, and Judy in community life. They are very excited to be involved in training and equipping the next generation of translation workers. Jeremy and Judy are MKs – “missionary kids” who both grew up in Africa. Judy’s parents worked with Africa Inland Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Jeremy’s parents served with Wycliffe in South Africa. They met at Briercrest Bible College while completing undergraduate degrees, Jeremy in biblical studies and Judy in TESOL. ‎ SCOTT, Tom The Scotts have been working alongside the people of Kingfisher Lake First Nation since 2018. Tom helps the local team navigate translation issues so that Oji-Cree speakers across Northern Ontario and Manitoba can encounter the gospel in their own language. He also works with the local language committee to help the community achieve their language goals. When in Kingfisher, the Scotts enjoy building relationships with friends, co-workers, and local youth. Africa WIEBE, Bruce and Raewyn Bruce develops alphabets for unwritten languages needing translation. He’s one of few in the world specializing in tonal languages. He travels back and forth to Mexico to consult with several language teams developing alphabets. He also coordinates staff and student research at the Canada Institute of Linguistics, Wycliffe’s training school. This helps keep translation on the cutting edge. Raewyn loves to share glimpses of God at work so that Bible translation projects can be well staffed and funded. As photography consultant for Wycliffe Canada, she photographs translation projects, manages the photo library, and is developing training to equip others as visual storytellers. ‎ LABRECQUE, Barbara At the age of 15 Barbara came to know Jesus as Lord and Saviour. From that time on the Bible, God’s written Word, played a large role in forming and transforming her mind and life. She went on several short term service trips and saw needs in many languages for Bible translation and literacy work. Between 1990 and 1994, she studied at Prairie Bible College in Three Hills, Alta., earning a BA in Intercultural Studies with a minor in New Testament Greek. Later, she attended the Canada Institute of Linguistics (CanIL) in Langley, B.C., studying linguistics. In 1998, she and her family joined Wycliffe Bible Translators and were assigned to work in the South Pacific country of Vanuatu. In 2001, the young family travelled to Vanuatu and began working with the Paama people. Within one year, they had also begun working with the Southeast Ambrym people, who speak a related language. Work progressed for 16 years with the Scriptures being translated, national translators being trained, church leaders trained, Bible studies written, six years of Sunday school lessons developed, school curriculum developed and school teachers trained. Finally, in May 2016, the Paama and Southeast Ambrym people of Vanuatu celebrated the dedications of the Bible in their two language groups (printed full New Testament with Old Testament summary, and 80% available in audio format). Since 2013, Barbara has been reassigned to CanIL in Langley, Wycliffe’s Canadian training school.
