(2004 – 2008), the Wycliffe Global Alliance office in Singapore (2008 – 2010), the Wycliffe Global Alliance Asia-Pacific office in Manila, Philippines (2011 – 2016) and the Global Bible Translators in Korea (2017 – currently). Joseph and Ju research and provide training to local churches and seminaries on topics like Mission of God and Church, Missional Life of God’s People, Missional Interpretation of the Bible, Intercultural Communication & Leadership and Early Church. Asarɨ'o South Pacific Back to all projects Overview The Asarɨ’o people, an indigenous language group in the mountainous jungles of Papua New Guinea, number around 1,500. Mostly consisting of subsistence farmers, this rural community highly values relationships and hospitality . For the past 20 years, Bible translation activity has been underway in the Asarɨ’o language. Though the community demonstrated interest in this work, the team lacked the capacity and necessary resources to succeed in the translation process. Consequently, progress was hampered. The need to reimagine this project, and form a more holistic Bible translation initiative among the Asarɨ’o people, has become increasingly clear. A mother-tongue translation team is already in place, and will be led by a Bible translator from a neighbouring language group who has 25 years of experience. The initial goal is to translate the entire New Testament into Asarɨ’o. The spiritual landscape is ripe with opportunity . Local Asarɨ’o churches gather weekly, and long for translated Scripture. Without the translated Word, biblical truths are often misunderstood, and many Christians meld traditional beliefs and church teachings which contradict each other. Yet the small community of dedicated believers desires to grow in their knowledge of the Lord, and hunger for God’s Word in their language. Klinton (one of the teachers who attended the VCP workshop) was an outsider to the church and did not attend church at all. He was a changed person when he returned back to the village after the workshop. He now attends church regularly and he encourages others of his age group to do the same. After Klinton returned from the workshop, he met with local teachers who were curious about the VCP materials that were produced. This past January, he also began building a classroom in Bosamia. The classroom has now been built and plans are underway to have their first intake of students, once supplies can be attained. Pastor’s Training Workshop: Pastors who attended the training have been applying what they learned to their preaching in the local churches. The Nukna people (one language group a few days hike away) asked if the training could be done in their villages next. Lots of opportunities for more training! Oral Bible Storying (OBS) Workshop: The area where the event will be held in July has been determined. Americas FENIAK, John and Juanita John and Juanita both grew up in Alberta. They met at Southern Alberta Bible Camp in 1986 and married in 1987. John worked for many years in engineering and project management (including 2 yrs in Malaysia) and Juanita looked after the home and their four children. However, around 2003 they began to sense God’s call into missions and a new and exciting season of their lives began. As the Scriptures have been a cornerstone for both John and Juanita, joining Wycliffe Bible Translators was a natural fit. In 2004 John and Juanita moved their family to Chiang Mai, Thailand, where they worked for 10 years in leadership and support roles for translation, training, and literacy work in the region (John), and serving in the missionary school, language survey, and other local church ministries (Juanita). John and Juanita are currently Development Officers, connecting regularly with Wycliffe donors across Canada. John and Juanita are committed to these support roles to help ensure the field work is fruitful and Scriptures are translated, so that every language can have the Word of God. Global SUGGETT, Colin and Dot While still in university, Colin and Dot began pursuing God’s call to mission. They discovered that the analytical skills required in Bible translation and linguistics dovetailed perfectly with their personalities and their training in the sciences. They joined Wycliffe in 1988 worked in linguistics and translation among the Turka people of Burkina Faso (West Africa) from 1993-2018. In 2019, the Suggetts transitioned to Canada, working from their home in St. Catharines, ON. Their years of field experienced equipped them for their new roles supporting Bible translation and literacy around the world. Colin is the lead software tester for BLOOM, a software suite which facilitates book production in marginalized languages. He provides user support and training for BLOOM as well. Dot is part of the team of exegetes, linguists, and IT developers around the world working on The Bible Translator’s Assistant (TBTA) software program. Dot uses her translations and grammar experience to help exegetically encode text for the program to use for translation projects. She also serves as a PD/Communication coach in the Partnership Development department. Global TOMPSETT, Mark and Charisma Mark Tompsett says his life includes bits and bytes and the Way of Life. This alliteration describes the meaning behind his work as a software professional for Wycliffe Canada’s partner organizations. Mark’s role empowers staff across the globe in their literacy and translation ministries, which in turn leads to people knowing about Jesus through God’s word. Mark became a member of Wycliffe in 2003. His first term overseas was in the Philippines. It was there that he met and married his beloved wife Charisma and their son Ezra was born. Mark’s initial work in the Philippines was maintaining various applications developed in Microsoft Access (a database management system). After this role, he transitioned into web-based development. The Tompsett family now lives in Ontario, where Mark remotely develops web applications. One project Mark helps maintain, Mail Administration, impacts everyone who sends corporate emails. It's a global impact. Together with partners worldwide, software projects maintained by Mark are assisting the ministry of Bible translation. He can't think of a better legacy than the grace, peace, mercy, and love of God made known through a Bible written in one's own heart language. ‎ EYRE, Roy and Becky Since joining Wycliffe in 1997, Roy and Becky Eyre have dedicated their careers to helping minority language communities flourish through engagement with God's Word. Their service in communications, leadership, and administration has taken them from Calgary to Orlando, and back to Calgary in 2011 when Roy was appointed president of Wycliffe Canada. Today, Becky leads Wycliffe Canada’s efforts to see all staff fully funded and supported in prayer. Roy serves with Wycliffe’s partner, SIL Global, making connections to help fund the work with frontier people groups and supporting a team of consultants working on a global change initiative. Eurasia EPP, Daniel and Lisa Daniel and his wife Lisa took an assignment in East Asia in 2017 to serve in aviation maintenance. They joined Wycliffe in 2014 and prior to moving overseas, they received training for their roles there and developed a team of prayer and financial supporters. In their country of assignment, Wycliffe’s partner organization uses aircraft to reach remote locations (usually inaccessible by road) and help transport people, goods and even pigs to serve the local communities. “Many of those who use the aircraft for transportation are people working in Bible translation projects,” says Daniel, “and that is the main reason we are there.” The Epps have four awesome kids. Americas KORTEN, Adrian and Beatrice Adrian grew up on a small farm in southwest Ontario. He first worked as a computer programmer with businesses in Ontario. He worked as a guest helper with Wycliffe New Zealand in 1991. After this experience, he realized he could use his programming skills in missions. Adrian began working in the Wycliffe Calgary office in 1993. Beatrice comes from Switzerland. Bea worked in a bank for a few years. She sensed a call to missions and connected with Wycliffe through a missionary in her home church. She then went to Calgary for a short term assignment in finance (1996-1997). During this time, she met Adrian and they were engaged to be married. After getting married, they took some training to prepare for an overseas assignment. They were seconded to a Wycliffe partner organization (SIL) and began office support work in Bangkok, Thailand. They have three children who were born in Bangkok: Elisha (Jonny), Micah and Larissa. In 2012, Adrian began work as the finance manager in Chiang Mai, Thailand. In June 2020, they returned to Calgary with their family. Bea resumed a role in finance, specifically receipts. Adrian began work in finance as an analyst. He began his current role as finance director in early 2024. The finance team, including receipts staff, is 12 people. The Kortens pray that their skills and talents, as well as their overseas experience and relationships, will be a blessing and asset while serving in Canada.
