Growing with “the gizmo”

Workers with AIDIA, Wycliffe Canada’s partner organization in Peru, were surprised when they visited the community of Pacayura, site of a newly planted church.

They were impressed with the Bible knowledge of a 65-year-old man named Cerefino, a speaker of the Eastern Apurímac Quechua. They asked him how he could tell Jesus’ parables. Cerefino said one of the church planters had given him “a gizmo that only speaks the Bible.”

“Every day at 3 o’clock in the morning, I turn on the gizmo and for three hours I listen to the Bible,” explained Cerefino. “Sometimes I go to the city; during that time I’m listening to the Word of God. So, I learned from the Bible. Also every weekend, I hang the gizmo in the molle tree and let my neighbours listen.”

When the AIDIA visitors asked him about the gizmo, he went home and returned with it—a Proclaimer audio player filled with God’s Word translated into Eastern Apurímac Quechua by the AIDIA Bible translation team.

In this remote village, audio Scriptures are impacting an old man.
