Africa WIEBE, Bruce and Raewyn Bruce develops alphabets for unwritten languages needing translation. He’s one of few in the world specializing in tonal languages. He travels back and forth to Mexico to consult with several language teams developing alphabets. He also coordinates staff and student research at the Canada Institute of Linguistics, Wycliffe’s training school. This helps keep translation on the cutting edge. Raewyn loves to share glimpses of God at work so that Bible translation projects can be well staffed and funded. As photography consultant for Wycliffe Canada, she photographs translation projects, manages the photo library, and is developing training to equip others as visual storytellers. ‎ LABRECQUE, Barbara At the age of 15 Barbara came to know Jesus as Lord and Saviour. From that time on the Bible, God’s written Word, played a large role in forming and transforming her mind and life. She went on several short term service trips and saw needs in many languages for Bible translation and literacy work. Between 1990 and 1994, she studied at Prairie Bible College in Three Hills, Alta., earning a BA in Intercultural Studies with a minor in New Testament Greek. Later, she attended the Canada Institute of Linguistics (CanIL) in Langley, B.C., studying linguistics. In 1998, she and her family joined Wycliffe Bible Translators and were assigned to work in the South Pacific country of Vanuatu. In 2001, the young family travelled to Vanuatu and began working with the Paama people. Within one year, they had also begun working with the Southeast Ambrym people, who speak a related language. Work progressed for 16 years with the Scriptures being translated, national translators being trained, church leaders trained, Bible studies written, six years of Sunday school lessons developed, school curriculum developed and school teachers trained. Finally, in May 2016, the Paama and Southeast Ambrym people of Vanuatu celebrated the dedications of the Bible in their two language groups (printed full New Testament with Old Testament summary, and 80% available in audio format). Since 2013, Barbara has been reassigned to CanIL in Langley, Wycliffe’s Canadian training school. Americas KORTEN, Adrian and Beatrice Adrian grew up on a small farm in southwest Ontario. He first worked as a computer programmer with businesses in Ontario. He worked as a guest helper with Wycliffe New Zealand in 1991. After this experience, he realized he could use his programming skills in missions. Adrian began working in the Wycliffe Calgary office in 1993. Beatrice comes from Switzerland. Bea worked in a bank for a few years. She sensed a call to missions and connected with Wycliffe through a missionary in her home church. She then went to Calgary for a short term assignment in finance (1996-1997). During this time, she met Adrian and they were engaged to be married. After getting married, they took some training to prepare for an overseas assignment. They were seconded to a Wycliffe partner organization (SIL) and began office support work in Bangkok, Thailand. They have three children who were born in Bangkok: Elisha (Jonny), Micah and Larissa. In 2012, Adrian began work as the finance manager in Chiang Mai, Thailand. In June 2020, they returned to Calgary with their family. Bea resumed a role in finance, specifically receipts. Adrian began work in finance as an analyst. He began his current role as finance director in early 2024. The finance team, including receipts staff, is 12 people. Africa HAJIAN, Nora Hailing from Canada’s Yukon Territory, Nora serves with Wycliffe’s key partner, SIL, in Tanzania as a lexicography (i.e., dictionary) specialist in 2019 shortly before COVID-19 appeared, and spent much of her first term working from home in Canada. Global TOMPSETT, Mark and Charisma Mark Tompsett says his life includes bits and bytes and the Way of Life. This alliteration describes the meaning behind his work as a software professional for Wycliffe Canada’s partner organizations. Mark’s role empowers staff across the globe in their literacy and translation ministries, which in turn leads to people knowing about Jesus through God’s word. Mark became a member of Wycliffe in 2003. His first term overseas was in the Philippines. It was there that he met and married his beloved wife Charisma and their son Ezra was born. Mark’s initial work in the Philippines was maintaining various applications developed in Microsoft Access (a database management system). After this role, he transitioned into web-based development. The Tompsett family now lives in Ontario, where Mark remotely develops web applications. One project Mark helps maintain, Mail Administration, impacts everyone who sends corporate emails. It's a global impact. Together with partners worldwide, software projects maintained by Mark are assisting the ministry of Bible translation. Africa SEGUIN, Larry A native of Windsor, Ont., Larry joined Wycliffe Canada in 1986 and has been serving in Cameroon since 1988. Over the years, Larry has served in a variety of roles, ranging from sociolinguistic surveyor and linguistics researcher to training co-ordinator and director of language services. Since February 2017, he has been co-ordinating the Community Engagement and Sociolinguistics department, with a focus on capacity-building in two major areas: Enhancing the engagement of local language communities in Bible translation and language development projects. This includes regularly holding community-level seminars called “The Language and Identity Journey” and training workshops in “Community-Based Language and Identity Development” and “Participatory Methods for Engaging Communities.” Helping co-ordinate a leadership development and mentoring program for Wycliffe’s field partner, SIL Cameroon, so that SIL’s ministries to Cameroon’s language communities can continue well into the future under an enthusiastic and well-equipped new generation. Americas TRICK, Doug and Phyllis Doug and Phyllis grew up in Manitoba and met while attending Providence College. Doug had begun studying there with a view to serving as a pastor. He frequently heard about how God was at work around the world, but he thought that his limited ability at learning another language meant that he should stick with English. (He had no idea at the time that learning a language, while experiencing life and community in that language and culture, is a totally different thing than what he’d gone through in elementary school and even in college!) In his final year at college, he heard for the first time that millions of people still have no Scripture in their language. Having grown deeply in his relationship with God through studying Scripture at Providence, he found it unimaginable that so many people groups were still waiting for a translation. After Bible college, Doug and Phyllis studied linguistics and Bible translation, and in 1981 began serving in the Philippines. During their 25 years there, they worked with local people in translating Scripture and in other areas of language development. Doug also taught in a program equipping Asians in Bible translation. Since 2006, Doug and Phyllis have been working from Canada. Doug mentors experienced translators to become Scripture translation consultants in a program offered by Wycliffe Canada’s training partner, the Canada Institute of Linguistics. South Pacific WEAVER, Nate and Jess Nate and Jess Weaver have been a part of the work in Papua New Guinea (PNG) since 2015. Nate is a Scripture Engagement worker with the Gulf Language Cluster Project in PNG. He travels back and forth from Canada to help increase access and engagement with God’s Word in the Gulf area. He has been helping to teach and lead Oral Bible Storytelling workshops with several different language communities. As well, Nate has helped lead and teach other workshops such as Story-based Trauma Healing and Scripture Application and Leadership Training. When Nate is not planning or travelling to PNG for workshops, he is working as a team member in the Member Care department of Wycliffe Canada.
