AIDIA Pastaza Translation Americas Back to all projects Overview Deep in the rainforest of Peru, some 12,000 Southern Pastaza and Northern Pastaza Quechua people dwell along the banks of two main rivers. In 1997, the Southern Pastaza New Testament was published. However, with the passage of time, copies of the New Testament are in short supply and additional copies are unavailable for purchase. Northern Pastaza speakers, on the other hand, have no translated Scriptures at all. AIDIA, the “Interdenominational Association for the Holistic Development of Apurímac,” is a ministry working in Peru to see Quechua people transformed by the Word of God in their languages. Their work includes translation, literacy, and leadership training for pastors and Sunday school teachers. Wycliffe Canada has been partnering with AIDIA for many years. Now that the Bible in Eastern Apurímac Quechua is about to be printed, we want to come alongside AIDIA as they expand their ministry into the Amazon rainforest. Through the AIDIA Pastaza Initiative, local teams, with the supervision of expert translation consultants, are finally making the full Bible available in Northern and Southern Pastaza. To this end, a complete revision of the South Pastaza New Testament, an adaptation of the Southern Pastaza New Testament to the Northern Pastaza, and selected Old Testament scriptures will be available in just a few years. The teams will also promote Scripture use in Pastaza-speaking churches and communities. This will be done by translating Bible-based reading materials and hymnals, teaching mother-tongue literacy, and equipping pastors in leadership and specific skills to use the translated Scriptures in their ministry. The team will be using methods that have proven effective and yielded phenomenal Bible literacy growth with the Peruvian Apurímac Quechuas. The AIDIA Pastaza team Your partnership is key With your support, these two indigenous communities will gain access to the full counsel of God’s Word. You will also help equip them to meaningfully engage with the translated Scriptures as they become available. With your help, AIDIA will work with local Christians to: Translate the entire Bible into two Quechua languages: Southern Pastaza and Northern Pastaza. As a first stage, the New Testament will be fully revised for Southern Pastaza, The Northern Pastaza will have an adaptation of the Southern Pastaza. Conduct survey work to identify needs. To begin the project, the team has completed comprehensive survey work with local leaders. This allowed them to better understand the linguistic features of both languages, as well the two communities’ self-identified needs. Teach literacy. Literacy programs in their own languages and literacy materials, such as dictionaries, provide education. Literacy also prepares the soil of the heart for the Bible’s impact. Promote engagement with Scripture. The team will encourage the use of translated Scriptures in both language groups through the translation of songs, evangelism booklets, discipleship studies, and more. These will equip locals to study and apply God’s Word. Share the gospel in creative ways. To eliminate language barriers to the Good News, a variety of audiovisual media are being created and distributed. Translated portions of the Bible will even be promoted on local radio stations! Once translation work is finished, audio recordings of the Bible will be produced and distributed. This will be especially meaningful for illiterate individuals. The team will also train locals to share Bible stories orally. Equip local Christian leaders. Leaders will be trained in evangelism and discipleship. They will be equipped to plant new churches and be effective in their various ministries. The team will also train Sunday school teachers and provide a translated curriculum for children and youth. Day camps, Bible schools and retreats will be provided for children. The training sessions successfully equipped teachers to use discipleship materials with about 130 children. Following the training sessions, Southern Pastaza teachers launched a Sunday school in the dining room of the lead pastor’s house. This served as a “model” class based on the training. Since then, 12 to 15 local children have gathered weekly to learn from God’s Word. The challenge to reach cultures steeped in Buddhism and animism is immense . On a recent class field trip, students visited a school based on one students’ Lahu mother tongue. Together with other classmates they are working on developing local literacy materials. Americas HETTINGA, Justin and Tammy Justin grew up in Saskatoon, Sask., while Tammy grew up in Chilliwack, B.C. and later (junior and senior high years) in the Peruvian Amazon as a Wycliffe missionary kid. This prairie boy and jungle girl met at Canadian Bible College in Regina, Sask. Their shared interest in South America and their desire to serve in cross-cultural ministry were two of many things that sparked their relationship, which resulted in marriage in 1994. They joined Wycliffe Bible Translators in 1997 and began their training with Wycliffe Canada’s training partner, the Canada Institute of Linguistics, in 1998. By 1999, they were on their way to Costa Rica for Spanish studies. The following year, they began their first assignment in Peru as adult literacy specialists among the Quechua people. There they helped several indigenous organizations develop sustainable literacy and Bible translation programs. In 2007, Justin completed his master of arts in leadership degree (non-governmental organization specialization) from Trinity Western University (done mostly via distance while in Peru). Having completed their project in the summer of 2010, they moved to Wycliffe Canada’s headquarters in Calgary, where they served on the leadership/administrative team for six years. In May 2016, Justin began serving as the Americas Area director for SIL (Wycliffe’s main field partner). In this role, he gives leadership to all of SIL’s work in North, Central, South America, and the Caribbean. Tammy is his administrative assistant. Although their roles have changed over the years, their vision remains the same: that all peoples on earth have access to the Word of God in a language they understand best, enabling them to flourish in life and know God. Global DIRKS, Wayne and Valerie Wayne and Valerie serve at Wycliffe Canada’s head office in Calgary, where they support the huge task of translating the Word of God into the languages of the world that don’t have it yet. Wayne helps in custom website programming and design. Valerie serves in a leadership role, supporting administrative roles. Wayne and Valerie began their journey with Wycliffe in 1994, serving first in Kenya, where Wayne worked in IT support and Scripture publishing for 18 New Testaments in different languages across Africa. Valerie’s role included supporting other staff involved in the work. South Pacific MEISNER, Janine Janine grew up in the Philippines as a daughter of missionary teachers, and knew from a young age that she also wanted to be a missionary teacher. After obtaining her degree, and gaining three years of experience in a Manitoba school, she joined Wycliffe Bible Translators in 2001. Janine’s experiences as a third culture kid (TCK) led her to move back to the Philippines in 2001. She had various roles at Faith International Academy in Davao City over the years which included teaching students in elementary (grades 3 & 5) and middle school (grades 6-8). She especially enjoyed being in leadership as the middle school lead teacher and then as the K-12 principal. Janine returned to Canada in June 2025 and is currently working in Calgary as the Director of Applications and Short Term Staff. ‎ MEJIA, Braden and Stephanie Braden and Stephanie became members of Wycliffe in 2025 and 2024 respectively. They met at the Canada Institute of Linguistics (CanIL), Wycliffe’s training partner at Trinity Western University. There, Braden completed his MA in Linguistics and Translation and Stephanie her BA in Linguistics. They’ve been married since January 2025 and are currently working toward an assignment in Francophone Africa, where they will serve in linguistics, literacy and translation.
